Greetings! I am Capn Pompadour and, well, I am addicted to 2-D shooters (sorry, never liked the word "shmup"). In addition to an ace shooter pilot, I am also a writer.

Some of my favorite shooters are:

-DoDonPachi (pretty much all of them)
-Gradius (1-3 mostly)
-Ikaruga
-Raiden (all)
-Gunbird (both)
-Xevious
-The Shanghai Alice games
-Dangun Feveron
-Warning Forever

Anyway, it's good to be here!

That's a great desert island selection you've got lined up. smile.gif The Touhou games are great.. I'm also a big Cave and Treasure fan (Although most times people are on one side or the other).. Being a Treasure fan I'd probably add Gradius V to the list.

Anyway, welcome to the site!

Yeah, I hear Gradius V kicks ass, but I haven't been able to get my hands on it, darnit. I'm sure I'll locate it after some good searching though.

Hi! I enjoy shooters although I believe that the state of them on consoles is in decadence as of late, which is why I am mainly only interested in the PC doujin scene. This is especially manifested by the fact that while the PC is being bestowed by a variety of promising titles such as Alltynex 2nd (enjoyable fast paced 3D shmup) and Genetos (time traveling with shmups? Sounds like a splendid concept!) , platforms like the Wii are merely serving as the homes of antiquated classics plenarily devoid of any extra features; basically, no-frills ports without any of the fancy graphical enhancements so prevalently employed in emulation; Super 2x Sai anyone?

With that out of the way, here are some of my favorite shmups:

-TG16 CD-
Lords of Thunder (a superbly creative shooter with a nice metal soundtrack)
Gate of Thunder (a finely tuned shmup, which has none of the trial-and-error elements that saturate Thunder Force III; oh, the agony of sporadic projectiles and hazards.)

-NES-
Gun Nac (an enjoyable shmup with some non-linearity due to the variety of bombs)
Over Horizon (a little known game with terrific level design; employing such creative features as movable ice blocks and door switches)

-PC98-
Flame Zapper Kotsujin (a fast paced shmup that will likely appeal to the mainstream audience as well as casual shmup fans)

-PC-
Kamui (a title that easily rivals Rayforce in fun factor and intensity; especially noteworthy are the incredible boss battles)
Zen-Ichi (a all-around high-grade title; intense boss fights and even a 2P mode!)
Bike Banditz (fluid shmup that plays just as well as it looks; boasting a dynamic soundtrack, nifty cel-shaded visuals, and a 2P mode as well!)
Baryon (Korean shmup that surpasses Raiden 1&2 in a multitude of ways such as gameplay, level design, and musical score (it blows the Raiden series' much vaunted BGM out of the water, IMO; 2P is also supported and both ships have exclusive weapons.)
Frane 3 Gaiden (an obscure title with amazing attention to animation and some of the transcendently epic boss battles; the first level features a boss who has the ability to command subordinates to bombard the player with bullets)
Ether Vapor (a title that features cinematic perspective variations, phenomenally well done boss battles and set pieces, and strategic gameplay due to the combination of 2D and 3D attacks as well as the well made weaponry)
Rally Raid (alluring title with level design of quality atypical of that of present shmups)
Syu-so-Gyoku (a Danmaku styled shooter with exceptional bullet patterns and great speed.)

-Genesis-
Twinkle Tale (a shmup with remarkable level design; exhibits some freedom of movement, interesting boss fights, and non-linear paths!)
M.U.S.H.A. (an exciting shmup with creativity that is made palpable by both the level and enemy design)

-Arcade-
ESP Ra.De. (visually pleasing shmup with nicely detailed levels and a bullet hell style of gameplay)
Blazing Star (a Neo-geo shmup with excellent graphics and upbeat soundtrack)

Anent other hobbies that I have, I'm currently learning how to draw in the Japanese style. Part of the reason is that I enjoy the kind of storytelling manga promotes; more emphasis on picture-writing than on mere words. To elucidate, if one were to check out a copy of a random Western comic such as The Legion of Superheroes or Batman, one would find a plethora of words in the form of speech, thought balloons, captions, footnotes, and so forth. The reason is that Western comics promote the idea of telling the story rather than showing it; the pictures are nothing more than a complement to the author's text. Conversely, manga is based upon the image and thus holds far less written information than does a typical Western comic book page.

In any case, Postman invited me here and I have to offer kudos to him for introducing me to this community. This is Technosylph signing out; it's nice to meet you!

Nice selection of games. I'll need to check these out as I haven't done too much shmupping on the NES. BTW: welcome to the site!

Heya!

I awlays liked the SHMUP games and since I started to play Mars Matrix in 2001, I became a fan of the danamku genre (even considering the fact I really sucked playing Mars Matrix).

Just like Technosylph said, I love the doujin games and my favs are the Touhou Series (I'm a Touhou-holic), End Effector, Warning Forever, Geometry Wars and Radio Zonde.

And to finish, just to make sure, my real name is Fabio. Giles is just my main RPG character happy.gif'''

Hello everyone,

I too am a fellow crazed shooter. I like playing games that require patience and skill, especially when it comes to dodging. I'm good at what I do, but I have two handicaps: 1. Bomb usage never occurs to me when it might come in handy, and 2. My brain doesn't work well with horizontal shooters. I have no idea why.

Here's what I like playing:

Any 194x
Any DoDonPachi
Any ... aw heck, all of it!

I think in the end, it's the level of concentration required that appeals to me. I also play piano and organ, and any game that requires the same concentration and skill as a musical instrument is right down my alley. Here's to shooters!

Hi all,

Tonybluehose here. I'm a huge fan of shooters and old school 2d games. Make 'em difficult, make 'em challenging and I love it. I really got my first taste of pure 2d adrenaline with Viewtiful Joe...then I quickly went to Alien Hominid...and then it dawned on me to try Ikaruga. And after that, well, the rest is shooter history.

I'm still a big fan of run and guns like Metal Slug (well, I guess only Metal Slug) though currently I'm trying out Ninja Commando (from the Neo Geo) on the Wii.

Okay,

Take Care!

tbh

Welcome to the site... And it's not odd, most shmup fans are run and gun fans as well.

BTW: I've been playing Metal Slug 7 on the DS and it's great!

Thanks for the welcome! MS7 is a great game. Don't know if you've picked up the Metal Slug Anthology for Wii, but it's great (except for the wonky waggle control when you want to throw a grenade, but hey, for 40 bucks and a bunch of games, you can't go wrong).

Yeah, Metal Slug Anthology is great. I just picked up the classic controller for the Wii but I haven't tried it out to see how it works yet. Should be a bit more fun with it though.

Hmmm, been a while since I posted, so you probably figured out that MSAnthology only uses the NES style control style or using a joystick type method that doesn't really work. Anyway, the classic controller doesn't run with it which stinks.

Anyway, I plugged it back in this week to see how far I could get on one credit and well, on MS6 it wasn't very far at all. ha! Back to Castle of Shikigami III!

I just now found this topic here...

I go by the name Raigon on just about anything online, so if you see a Raigon online somewhere, it's probably me. I've recently started playing shmups about a year ago, being turned on by a SNES game called "Strike Gunner", of coarse now I'm into Bullet Hell (which I normally call Danmaku's by the way) and anything that involves blasting a lot of enemies. I especially love the games CAVE makes along with games by x.x and ZUN. Sadly, living in a smaller town in the corner of the god's blind spot known as Kansas, there arn't very many people who share the same passion for shmuping as I do...

Okay, aside from the shmups and what not, I LOVE making music. I make techno, whether it's Trance, Chiptune, or Hardcore, I can make it. I've also tried making a few games before, but never actually finished the. Now, I'd just like to make song loops for shmups or any Indie game in general to help spread my music.

This forum may not be to active, but I feel rather attracted to this site, so...... yeah.....

sup.

Concerning a favorite game list, I really don't like making an entire one at the moment (there's THAT many) But I like:

Any Touhou game
Blue Wish Resurrection PLUS
Edens Edge & Aegis
(Do)DonPachi
E.S.P. RaDe (though I'm not very good at it.)
Ikaruga (YES!)
Thunder Force V
Raiden III
R-Type Final (perhaps my favorite of them all)
Strike Gunner
Gradius (any Gradius. I love them all)
Galshell 1&2 (those games are SERIOUSLY f$%#ed up, man. o.O)
Minishoter RS Delta
Ocean Mix

Also, seeing how I mentioned I make music, here's a link to some of my stuff:
http://raigon50.newgrounds.com/audio/

--------------------
Give me an R9-a "Arrow Head" and some Bydo, and I'll figure out the rest.
