  1. The Fourth Generation

    The Fourth Generation is a decent side-scrolling shooter from Webfoot that looks good, plays good, but unfortunately is too repetitive to go up against the likes of Gradius.
    The game can be played in either a single or two-player mode (hotseat), with mouse, keyboard, or joystick. You will be attracted by excellent VGA backgrounds that give good illusions of three-dimensional depth, and the wide variety of weapons and power-ups you can upgrade your ship with. However, enemy ship designs are far too repetitive, the "boss" ships are not much more inspiring, and the computer doesn't put up much of a challenging fight. If you are new to the shooter genre and want to try a decent shareware game, The Fourth Generation fits the bill-- for a little while until you find out how repetitive it is. A lackluster underdog, this one.

  4. Thunder Blade

    Thunder Blade (サンダーブレード Sandāburēdo) is an arcade, flight-based, third-person rail shooter originally released for video arcades in 1987. In the game, players control a helicopter to destroy enemy vehicles.
    The game was released as standard stand-up arcade cabinet that introduced the use of force feedback, as the joystick vibrates during gameplay. A sit-down unit was also released, replacing the force feedback with a seat that moves in tandem with the joystick.
    Versions of the game were later released for the Sega Master System, Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, Commodore 64, DOS, MSX, TurboGrafx-16, Sharp X68000 and ZX Spectrum. The Nintendo 3DS remake was released as a 3D Classic in Japan on August 20, 2014, in North America and Europe on May 14, 2015, and in Australia on July 2, 2015.
    The game's plot and setting resembles the 1983 film and 1984 TV series of Blue Thunder. The player controls a helicopter using guns and missiles to destroy enemy tanks, helicopters, etc., to save his home country. Levels are in both a top-down or third-person perspective view. The boss levels are in the top-down view.

    Cho Ren Sha 68K

    Cho Ren Sha 68K is a vertical scrolling shoot 'em up in which the player takes control of an unnamed spaceship to fight against a horde of enemy spacecraft on a giant and seemingly endless ring-shaped space station. The game features a loop system whereby after defeating the last boss of stage 0 in loops 1, 3, 5 and 7 the player starts at the beginning of stage 1 with an increase on the game’s difficulty level. The game features a total of seven stages and eight loops in total.
    One of the most notable aspects of Cho Ren Sha 68K is the power-up system. The game only features 3 types of items: Power-up! (which increases the ship's firepower up to four times), Bomber (which grants the player another screen-clearing bomb and can be stocked for a total of five bombs) and Shield, which gives the player an extra hit and if the ship gets hit by an enemy bullet, it emits a small shockwave that clears the screen of enemy bullets and weak enemies. Power-ups are carried by enemy carriers, distinguished by their red cockpit on the center and when destroyed, the power-up icons will appear in a small and harmless electrified ring and if the players takes one of the three, the other two will disappear. However, if the player manages to stay on the center of the ring for a very bried period of time, he will get all 3 at the same time. The power-up system of the game is said to be the basis of similar mechanics found in other dōjin titles such as Crimzon Clover and Fraxy.
    Another notable aspect of Cho Ren Sha 68K is the scoring system. Based on how close the player is to the enemy, the player will either get more or less points for doing so. After the ship is fully powered up, the power-up icons will grant only points until the player's ship gets destroyed, with the highest value being 25600 points. Depending on the number of lives, bombs and having an active shield, the player receives a determined score at the end of each stage. Staying in the electrified ring and getting all 3 power-up icons is an important maneuver for reaching high-score across multiple gameplay sessions.
    When the player reaches one million points, the shield power-up is replaced by a 1UP icon. The player has the option of either grabbing just the 1up or risk to stay within the electrified ring to grab all three items at the same time. Losing the 1up means that it will not appear again unless the player reaches another one million points in order to get another opportunity.
    Cho Ren Sha 68K has multiple settings on the configuration menu, however, by holding up for a few seconds, the player has access to a hidden configuration menu that are not available on the first menu.

    The spiritual precursor to Safari's more famous shooter Tyrian, Highway Hunter is an addictive, knuckle-blistering shooter from obscure Russian developer Omega Integral Systems (OIS).
    The game puts you in control of an armed-to-the-hilt car instead of the more common spaceship. The gameplay is straightforward shooting mayhem: kill everything in sight and collect power-ups to prepare for the end-level boss. A wide variety of power-ups, enemies, and levels makes this a must-play for all shooter fans. Recommended, and also check out Highway Fighter, the 1993 spiritual "prequel" that is even more obscure than this game.

    In the crowded arena of Space Invaders clones (there must be hundreds of them floating around the WWW), Cash Invaders stands out from the rest with sheer size and playability.
    Inspired not only by Space Invaders but also by Psygnosis' Blood Money and other space shooters, * Cash Invaders* features a staggering amount of levels - 100 in all, plus 10 bonus levels. You shoot aliens to earn money, which you can use at the end of each level to buy power-ups. There is a large arsenal of weaponry, power-ups, and types of aliens, which means the game will sustain your interest for much longer than a typical Space Invaders clone. Smoothly animated ray-traced graphics and nice ship/alien design rounds off this fun underdog that you will come back now and again for some mindless fun. Highly recommended!

  24. Dawn Raider

    An okay top-down shooter from prolific Taiwanese developer SoftStar, Dawn Raider takes place in a futuristic world where the Earth is rife with civil wars that broke out among warring clans. The game won't dislodge Tyrian or even Silpheed from their lofty pillars of classic games in the genre, but it does offer a few hours of good ol' shooting fun where blasting everyting in sight is the only thing you need to know about. The enemies are fairly typical and somewhat boring-- you'll meet fighter planes, ground defense, and all manners of nasty planes that shoot homing missiles. The end-level bosses, though, are much more creative and very difficult to destroy.
    Overall, Dawn Raider may not knock anyone's socks off, but it is worth a few hours if you want to relieve some stress from the last few levels of Silpheed.

  25. Blood Money

    To cut it short: Everything that made the Amiga version of Blood Money one of the most enjoyable shoot'em ups ever is missing is this PC conversion.
    So what's left is a mediocre game-- the great soundtrack, graphics, and even fluid gameplay of the Amiga version is nowhere to be found here. What a pity. (You expected me to trash this, right?) Still, some might consider this a nice game if you love classic side-scrolling shooters in general.
    Everyone should download the Amiga ROM from some Amiga site and play it on an emulator, though, to see how good this game can get. Disappointing.
